Claire Jowitt, recently shortlisted for the European Society for the Study of English book award in the category of Literatures in the English Language, has just been given an honourable mention for The Culture of Piracy: English Literature and Seaborne Crime at the awards ceremony in Istanbul this month.
Published in Ashgate’s popular Transculturalisms, 1400-1700 series, The Culture of Piracy examines the cultural impact of piracy in the early modern period. Examining works by Drake, Fletcher and Massinger, Claire Jowitt’s text identifies the pirate as a vehicle for social and political commentary of the Renaissance age.
