The definition of ‘philanthropy’ past and present

Posted by Claire Percy, Senior Marketing Executive

The first episode of a new series ‘How new is the new philanthropy?’ began on BBC Radio 4 on 12th December.

Presented by Professor Hugh Cunningham, the series looks at the history of philanthropic giving in Britain from the 18th to the 21st century, a timely topic given the current debate on the inequality of wealth in our society.

Hugh Cunningham interviews Dr Clare Rose author of the Ashgate book, Making, Selling and Wearing Boys’ Clothes in Late-Victorian England, who discusses her research on Thomas John Barnardo as featured in the book.

Episode One is available on BBC iplayer and the series continues on 19th and 26th December.
